The company "Eko Osta", which collects and recycles environmentally hazardous and hazardous waste, has carried out remediation works within the third phase of the environmental remediation project of the Port of Liepaja's Karosta Channel.
The works were carried out on behalf of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority. 145 199 cubic metres of historically contaminated sediments containing approximately 298 tonnes of hazardous chemicals were removed from the Karosta Channel. As the Karosta area is becoming an increasingly important socio-economic and social part of Liepaja, the canal remediation works carried out under the project will allow local residents and tourists to enjoy the values of the Karosta in a cleaner and higher quality environment, contributing to the recovery of its aquatic ecosystems and reducing pollution.
The remediation of the Karosta Channel in the Port of Liepaja is a unique project at the European level, therefore the results of the project should be in line with the best practice in the implementation of environmental protection projects. One of the project partners - the Norwegian Water Research Institute (NIVA) - is participating in the project with the aim to demonstrate examples of similar remediation works in Norway and to provide knowledge to Latvian specialists, who will be responsible for maintaining the remediation objectives in the future.
The remediation works are carried out within the framework of the project "Remediation works of the historically polluted site of the Port of Liepaja, Karosta Channel" implemented by the Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority. The aim is to reduce the negative impact of historically contaminated sediments in the Karosta Channel on the environment, human health and the ecological status of the Baltic Sea. The project is funded under the Norwegian Financial Mechanism's Climate Change Mitigation, Adaptation and Environment Programme for the period 2014-2021.
This is a continuation of previous activities to remediat the Karosta Channel in the Port of Liepaja. With the EU Cohesion Fund funding, the project "Historically Contaminated Sites in the Port of Liepaja Karosta channel remediation Phase I" was implemented until 2015, during which large amounts of technogenic contamination (scrap metal, concrete masses, wood, etc.) were removed from 78 ha of the canal and disposed of. In the most contaminated section, ~50 000 m³ of contaminated sediments were removed and deposited in a specially equipped disposal site at the eastern end of the Karosta Channel, with the direct participation of Eko Osta Ltd.
The project is funded under the Norwegian Financial Mechanism's Climate Change Mitigation, Adaptation and Environment Programme 2014-2020. The total cost of the project is €4.737 million, of which €4.027 million is funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.
